SUMMARY:Afternoon with the Author: Anthony Bukoski
DESCRIPTION:Anthony Bukoski\, The Thief of Words \nFrom University of Wisconsin Press: “The Thief of Words is filled with desperate runaways\, the unhappily married\, and the displaced. These characters often long for happiness but struggle to explain—even to themselves—what that would entail. \nThe lightly interconnected stories in this riveting collection are split between the Polish American communities of northern Wisconsin and Louisiana\, where refugees from World War II were resettled. Exploring themes of dislocation and assimilation\, love and loneliness\, and generational conflict\, Anthony Bukoski admirably paints portraits of people doing their best\, despite the odds and their sometimes-thwarted attempts to follow the urgings of their better angels.” \nFor forty-one years\, Anthony Bukoski has written short stories about Polish Americans in northern Wisconsin. In the program\, he will tell why he began doing this and how he has been inspired to continue. Though understanding that the stories may be flawed\, he has been loyal to his subject\, never straying from it. He will read very brief passages from a few of the stories and conclude by reading “A Sea Story” from The Thief of Words. \nA discussion will follow. \nHe will be pleased to sign books afterward. \nAnthony Bukoski was born and raised in Superior\, Wisconsin\, the port city where his Polish immigrant grandparents settled. The author’s short story collections have twice won the Polish American Historical Association’s Creative Arts Award and once its Oskar Halecki Prize. The Sarmatian Review\, under the aegis of the Polish Institute of Houston\, also recognized Bukoski with its first Literary Award “for excellence in presenting the life of American Polish communities in the Midwest.”

SUMMARY:Screening of Three Colors: Blue by Krzysztof Kieślowski
DESCRIPTION:As part of their annual French film festival\, Lumières Françaises (July 11–17)\, the MSP Film Society and The Main Cinema will present a special screening of Three Colors: Blue\, directed by legendary Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Kieślowski. \nBlue (Trois Couleurs: Bleu) is the first film in the internationally acclaimed Three Colors trilogy. Though set in Paris and spoken in French\, its soul is unmistakably Polish—deeply reflective\, poetic\, and emotionally profound. The story follows a woman grappling with unimaginable personal loss as she searches for freedom and meaning—a theme deeply resonant with the Polish experience. \nKieślowski\, known in Poland for such masterpieces as Dekalog and The Double Life of Veronique\, brought his unique sensibility to this European co-production\, earning worldwide recognition while remaining firmly rooted in the Polish tradition of thoughtful\, symbolic cinema. \nWe warmly invite PACIM members and friends to join us in celebrating one of Poland’s greatest cinematic voices and to experience this moving work of art together. \nTICKETS 👉 https://mspfilm.org/show/certified-binoche-three-colors-blue/ \nPACIM members and friends can use the code PACIMLF25 to receive a ticket discount for the screening of Blue or any other film presented during Lumières Françaises. \nYou can find the full program for Lumières Françaises at: \n👉 https://mspfilm.org/series/lumieres-francaises/ \nCertified Binoche! SUMMARY:An Evening with Polish Cinema – Two Sisters
DESCRIPTION:PACIM is proud to present an exclusive screening of Dwie Siostry (Two Sisters)\, the newest film from acclaimed Polish director Łukasz Karwowski. This moving drama follows two sisters who\, after years of separation\, are drawn back together to face long-hidden family secrets. Blending personal conflict with universal themes of memory\, reconciliation\, and identity\, the film offers a gripping glimpse into the depth and artistry of contemporary Polish cinema. \nTwo half-sisters\, who have been in conflict for years\, set off to Ukraine to pick up their seriously injured father. They travel by car\, then by train\, in the end – on foot. The world of war\, bombarded houses and burnt down tanks is gradually revealed in front of their very eyes. Near Kharkiv they cross the frontline unawares and enter Russian-occupied territory. Will they manage to find their father? Is there a place for forgiveness and love in a world of war? What will this journey bring about?—Gdynia Film Festival \nThe screening will be followed by an open discussion\, providing an opportunity to share impressions and reflect on the film’s themes together. The movie will be presented with English subtitles. \nAdmission $10\, sold at the time of the show. \n \n \n  \nThe event is co-funded by the Polonia funds of the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Chicago. \n  \nDwie siostry (2024) © Canal+\, Polski Instytut Sztuki Filmowej\, Zoom Media

SUMMARY:The True Story of Tamara de Lempicka & the Art of Survival
DESCRIPTION:Step into the glamour of the art-deco era at the Minneapolis Institute of Art with a special screening of The True Story of Tamara de Lempicka. This dazzling documentary celebrates the life and legacy of the iconic Polish-born artist whose bold vision and style continue to inspire. Immediately after the film\, stay for a special conversation with Carson Kreitzer\, Broadway playwright of Lempicka. The evening continues with a dessert reception and bubbly toast in MIA’s stunning rotunda. \nWith her bold lines\, luminous color\, and unapologetic modernity\, Tamara de Lempicka stormed 1920s Paris and became the reigning queen of Art Deco. Beloved by collectors from Barbra Streisand to Madonna\, and immortalized on Broadway\, Lempicka’s art—and her life—were a dazzling rebellion. Julie Rubio’s riveting documentary\, the first feature-length portrait of this extraordinary Polish Jewish painter\, captures her meteoric rise\, her flight to the U.S. as fascism swept Europe\, and her fearless embrace of life as an immigrant\, an artist\, and a bisexual woman ahead of her time. Narrated by Anjelica Huston\, the film unveils newly unearthed treasures—including 8mm home movies—and reveals the lasting aesthetic power and political resonance of her work. Join us for this tribute to an icon who shattered conventions and painted her way into immortality. \nPOST-SCREENING CONVERSATION FEATURING \nCarson Kreitzer \nPlaywright\, Lempicka \nCarson Kreitzer is a playwright\, lyricist\, and librettist\, recipient of Guggenheim\, MacDowell\, and McKnight Fellowships and the Jonathan Larson Grant. She co-created Lempicka (with Matt Gould)\, which opened on Broadway in 2024\, and her other plays include The Love Song of J. Robert Oppenheimer\, The Slow Drag\, and Lasso of Truth. Her upcoming work includes TIMEBOMB\, Svalbard\, and Capital Crime. \nPACIM proudly recommends this film and encourages everyone to attend this unique cultural event celebrating one of Poland’s most fascinating artists. \nTo purchase tickets\, visit The True Story of Tamara de Lempicka at the MIA

SUMMARY:Romanian Film Festival 2025 – “Between Shadow and Light”
DESCRIPTION:This evocative film series explores the tension between darkness and illumination—both literal and metaphorical—within Romanian cinema. Between Shadow and Light invites audiences to experience stories that navigate the blurred lines between truth and illusion\, memory and myth\, oppression and resilience. Through carefully selected films\, the festival showcases Romania’s cinematic mastery in portraying the human condition with stark realism\, poetic nuance\, and haunting beauty. From rural landscapes steeped in folklore to urban dramas shaped by post-communist realities\, each screening offers a window into the soul of a nation grappling with its past and redefining its future. \nThe theme reflects the duality present in Romanian storytelling: the shadow of history\, censorship\, and trauma contrasted with the light of creativity\, resistance\, and cultural rebirth. Whether through minimalist dialogue\, long takes\, or symbolic imagery\, these films challenge viewers to confront uncomfortable truths while celebrating the enduring spirit of Romanian artistry. Between Shadow and Light is not just a festival—it’s a cinematic meditation on identity\, transformation\, and the power of storytelling to illuminate even the darkest corners. \nAs our primary visual organ\, the eye symbolizes knowledge and openness to new dimensions. It represents clarity\, observation\, awareness\, consciousness\, vigilance\, and intuition—qualities that guide us beyond surface perception into deeper understanding. The guarding eye serves as our guide\, protector\, and judge\, watching over us. It leads us toward the light\, illuminating truth and revealing the unseen. In its gaze lies the power to awaken\, to discern\, and to transcend. \nAll movies are in Romanian language with English subtitles. \nFor more information\, schedule of showings\, and to get free tickets\, see https://hora-mn.org/2025/08/27/romanian-film-festival-2025/
