SUMMARY:Polish Literature in English Reading Group - May 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Polish Complex\, Tadeusz Konwicki\, 1977 (1984)\, 211 pp. Surrealist Novel\nThis novel was translated into English within a few years of being published and presages conditions in Poland in the 1980s (or reflects those that already existed).  A mixture of surrealism and the absurdity of the everyday\, through which we will revisit what we thought we knew about Poland and the forging of Polishness through the fire of suffering.  Where possible we will compare with the surrealism of Witkacy from the previous month. \nGoogle Meet meeting details will be emailed to individuals who register using the button below. \nThis event is free to attend\, but if you’d like to support our reading group and help cover costs\, we invite you to make a donation. \n \n\n\nEvery contribution makes a difference!

SUMMARY:Locating Records from Poland Online
DESCRIPTION:Topic: Locating Records from Poland Online\nFinding records from Poland for genealogical research is a critical step in exploring our Polish ancestry but Poland’s complex history and the language barrier can be confusing. After a brief overview of Poland’s changing borders and their impact on the languages in which historical records were created\, Julie will explain the process of identifying one’s ancestral village and illustrate the use of gazetteers to determine the parish and civil registry offices. She will introduce key websites for locating historical records online and offline\, with an emphasis on sites that offer indexed records and digital images. Julie will suggest strategies to help you get around the language barrier\, and demonstrate how you can trace your Polish ancestry from the comfort of your own home. \nZoom Registration Required: https://tinyurl.com/rp2zubuw \nPresenter: Julie Roberts Szczepankiewicz \nJulie is a genealogist\, writer\, and speaker with nearly 30 years of experience in researching her family’s origins in Poland\, Germany\, the U.S.\, and Canada. SUMMARY:Virual Programming: What Were They Reading?
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Karen Majewski\nPresident\, Polish American Historical Association (PAHA)\nAttend it on Zoom:  https://us06web.zoom.us/j/88265554551?pwd=tjGo9dnlZeb1qhsWfBdvpmzA1r90ZK.1&from=addon\n\nOur Polish Ancestors and the Written Word will dispel the myth that Polish immigrants were illiterate and uninterested in reading and writing. Focusing on the late 19th century through the 1930s\, we will look at the wide variety of reading material being created and consumed in the Polish American community\, including religious materials\, newspapers\, and literature written in Poland and the United States\, including translations and original works. We will pay special attention to the publishing companies that served the Polish American community and to the writing produced by the immigrants themselves chronicling and interpreting their experiences in the United States.
