SUMMARY:Polish Literature in English Reading Group - September 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Slave by Isaac Bashevis Singer\nOriginally written in Yiddish by a Polish Jewish émigré\, this story recounts the experience of a Jew in the 17th century\, the period in which With Fire and Sword is set. Four years after the Chmielnicki massacres of the seventeenth century\, Jacob\, a slave and cowherd in a Polish village high in the mountains\, falls in love with Wanda\, his master’s daughter. Even after he is ransomed\, he finds he can’t live without her\, and the two escape together to a distant Jewish community. Racked by his consciousness of sin in taking a Gentile wife and by the difficulties of concealing her identity\, Jacob nonetheless stands firm as the violence of the era threatens to destroy the ill-fated couple. \nPACIM Library has a couple of copies of the novel\, as well as other books by the author\, available in both English and Polish. \nGoogle Meet meeting details will be emailed to individuals who register using the button below. \nThis event is free to attend\, but if you’d like to support our reading group and help cover costs\, we invite you to make a donation. \n \n\n\nEvery contribution makes a difference!

SUMMARY:Polish Literature in English Reading Group - October 2026
DESCRIPTION:Monologue of a Dog by Wisława Szymborska\nArguably the best volume of poetry by this Nobel Prize-winning poet in a dual language edition that will allow us to read her in translation and compare back to the original. With humor\, irony\, and compassion\, she explores everyday moments alongside larger questions of history\, memory\, love\, and human existence. \nPick your favorite to read to the group. \nPACIM Library has a copy of the book\, as well as other books by the author\, available in both English and Polish. \nGoogle Meet meeting details will be emailed to individuals who register using the button below. \nThis event is free to attend\, but if you’d like to support our reading group and help cover costs\, we invite you to make a donation. \n \n\n\nEvery contribution makes a difference!

SUMMARY:Remarks on American Student Reactions to Visiting Poland
DESCRIPTION:What happens when American university students encounter Poland for the first time—not through textbooks or headlines\, but by walking its streets\, visiting its historic sites\, and standing where history actually happened?\n“Remarks on American Student Reactions to Visiting Poland” explores those powerful first impressions. Since 2013\, Professor Dorothy Pisarski of Drake University has led seven travel seminars to Poland\, accompanying Midwestern university students as they studied the Holocaust and World War II at the very places where these histories unfolded. Students encountered important sites and primary artifacts firsthand\, transforming distant history into something immediate\, human\, and unforgettable. Hearing how first-time American visitors respond to Poland offers a fascinating opportunity to see the country through fresh eyes while reflecting on what its history means to us today. \nIn a world of shifting truths and rising polarization\, history demands more than remembering—it demands that we encounter it. The most important classroom may not be on a university campus\, but on site\, in Poland\, where the echoes of the past truly inspire us to build a more compassionate and just future. \nJoin us for an engaging look at what American students discovered in Poland. \nRefreshments will be served. \nAddmission is free.
